Wonder Woman‘s first appeared on October 21, 1941 in All Star Comics #8. Steve Trevor of the US Army is out fighting Nazis when his plane crashes on Paradise Island. Luckily, Hippolyta (Amazonian Queen) and Diana (Wonder Woman) find him. Even though the island forbids men, they make sure he receives medical treatment.

Hippolyta and her daughter Diana use magic to figure out how Steve Trevor got there. They learn of his plight against the Nazis and decide they want to help. Hippolyta must consult Aphrodite and Athena.

“Well what are we waiting for? Let’s see if anyone is hurt.”

“A man! A man on paradise island!”

“I must know who he is, how he got here!”

After consulting with the goddesses, Hippolyta decides she must send someone to help America fight for liberty and freedom. She organizes a tournament to determine who is the strongest and wisest out of the Amazonians.

Diana wants to fight in the tournament, but her mother won’t allow it. Going to America means never returning to Paradise Island. An obstinate Diana disguises herself, enters, and wins. Diana’s mother gives her an outfit and tells her she will be a “Wonder Woman” in America.

“He must be taken back to America!”

“Why can’t I enter into this tournament?”
