There have been many "Batgirls" within the DC Comics Universe, but let's talk about the first. In Batman #139 (April 1961), the blonde Bette Kane was the first batgirl to appear in DC comics. Bette discovers her aunt Kathy Kane is secretly Batwoman, and a new hero is born.
"Don't worry-- Bat-girl will save you!"
"Well-- Did I do alright, Aunt Kathy?"

Orgin of Robin
Robin first appeared in Detective Comics #38 in April 1940. Robin is a teenage aerial acrobat named Dick Grayson. He and his family worked at the circus, where they get murdered. The unfortunate chain of events leads him to become Batman's young crime-fighting sidekick.

"The whole world think I'm just a Plain Jane"
"A colorless female 'brain'! I'll show them..."
In Detective Comics #359 (January 1967), a new Batgirl debuted, Barbara Gordon. Barbara is police commissioner James Gordon's daughter and she eventually hooks up with Dick Grayson. Red-head Barbara Gordon is the most widely recognized version of Batgirl.
With a Ph.D. in library science, Barbara Gordon ran the Gotham public library. Headed to the Police's Masquerade Ball in a Batman-inspired costume, Barbara finds super-villain Killer Moth is trying to kidnap Bruce Wayne! She earns Batman's attention and begins fighting crime with him and Dick Grayson.
"Make a run for it Mr. Wayne before you get hurt!"
"Batgirl will handle these human moths!"
"I bet that's not the first time you've fallen for a woman"
"Batman, Bruce Wayne is in deadly danger"
"As for my secret identity..."
"I'll exchange mine for yours"
Batman: The Killing Joke
Barbara Gordon's Demise
In 1988 DC Comics released the controversial graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke, which tells the infamous Joker's backstory. Although the novel received much acclaim and even won an Eisner Award, it also bears heavy criticism for the brutality shown toward Barbara Gordon. The Joker strips, abuses (presumably rapes), and shoots and paralyzes her, thus ending Barbara's reign as Batgirl.
"You know its such a shame, you'll miss your father's debut"
"Wuh... wuh... why are you doing this?"
"No, its not okay! He's... he's taking it to the limit this time."
Brunette Dark Knight
First appearing in Batman #567 (July 1999), Cassandra Cain was born and raised to be the world's greatest assassin and Ra's al Ghul's bodyguard. Her father, assassin David Cain, forced her mother to bear a child for him or face certain death. Cassandra was raised mute and illiterate with no social skills. However, she is extremely intuitive and a badass fighter. After killing a man, she sensed what he thought and felt and realized it was wrong. She ran away and eventually became Batgirl.
